When I was planting my garden years ago, my sweet daughter opened up a whole packet of chamomile seeds and scattered them far and wide, while squealing, “Wheeeeeeeeee”.  For those of you who know me, I am a geometric person, who likes things planted in rows, straight rows  I had no idea where the seeds landed and after I got over the initial shock to my organized inner self, I delighted in the fact she was so carefree in her seed distribution.

As a result, this delicate flower from the daisy family is growing in numerous places, year after year. Don’t daisy-like flowers just make you happy?

The Medicinal and Health Benefits of Chamomile

Traditionally, chamomile has been used for centuries as an anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, mild astringent and healing medicine. According to U.S. National Library of Medicine, chamomile is one of the most ancient medicinal herbs known to mankind.

It is a member of Asteraceae/Compositae family and represented by two common varieties ~~ German Chamomile (Chamomilla recutita) and Roman Chamomile (Chamaemelum nobile).

The dried flowers of chamomile contain many terpenoids and flavonoids contributing to its medicinal properties. Chamomile preparations are commonly used for many human ailments such as hay fever, inflammation, muscle spasms, menstrual disorders, insomnia, ulcers, wounds, gastrointestinal disorders, rheumatic pain, and hemorrhoids. Chamomile is often used to treat mild skin irritations, including sunburn, rashes, sores and even eye inflammations. Making Tea

Being a believer that you are what you eat, I buy food items with a bit of healthy skepticism. I try to be conscientious of the quality of the ingredients and I am not sure what is used on commercially purchased tea leaves. Since I do not use any pesticides in my garden, I decide to make a tea this year using the fresh chamomile flowers. It is also possible to dry the flowers to make tea later. 

Unlike many other herbs, you want to collect the blossoms only, not the leaves, stems or roots.  The best time to harvest is mid-morning, after the dew has evaporated but before the mid-day sun. Just pinch off the delicate blossoms and shake off any dirt or insects.

As with most herbs, more quantity is needed when using fresh vs. dried.  I used 3-4 tablespoons of flowers into a small clear glass teapot with its own strainer.

If you do not have a tea pot with a strainer, you can use cheesecloth to bundle the herbs. You can also just strain the blossoms from the tea after steeping is done.

Add hot water and steep for 5 minutes.  Fresh chamomile tea has a clean, fruity, apple undertone which is different from dried chamomile. The Greek derivative of chamomile means “earth apple”. Makes sense because that is the taste I experience.

I did add one mint leaf….which seemed to enhance the chamomile flavor, not overwhelm it. Serve this fragrant, fresh tea in a deserving cup. Rarely do I add sweetener to my tea, and this one, in my opinion, doesn’t need anything! However honey or agave would be healthier option than processed sugar.

Treat Yourself to a Pretty Cup

I do believe the vessel from which you drink any beverage is important. Would this be as lovely in a styrofoam disposable cup? Take the time to find a cup that feels good in your hand and makes you happy.

Many of my dishes have a story. These wild strawberry Wedgwood tea cups were purchased in London at Harrod’s. We were on our way back to the US after a wonderful trip to Italy and stopped in England for a few days. Since I was accustomed to the euro conversion to US dollar in Italy, I didn’t realize until I was checking out, that these cups were priced in the British Sterling pound….significantly more expensive that I calculated. In a split second decision (picture me in line at the register with several people waiting behind me), I decide to buy them, cringing a bit at the total cost.

But now every single time I use one of these cups, I think back on that decision and am so happy I purchased them. Do you have a favorite cup or dish service?

After reading about all the benefits of this simple tea, I plan to drink it on a more consistent basis. Note: If you dry the chamomile for later use, store it in an airtight container out of the sunlight. I enjoy both the fresh and dried version of this tea.

Perhaps I will experiment with adding lavender…..and concoct the perfect sleepy time tea!

Chamomile is extremely easy to grow and it is so satisfying to do it yourself. Roman chamomile is a perennial, growing from the same root year after year. German chamomile is an annual, but don’t expect it to grow in the garden for just one year! It self-sows freely and you can bet if you plant it one time, it will spring up in the garden from then on.

Happy Saturday and can you even believe it is March already?!? Being raised in the northeast, there are traditional sayings for some of the months. Will March be “in like a lion and out like a lamb”? Our weather in Phoenix is finally a bit warmer in the mornings( mid-40s) and afternoons (mid-60s-70s). With all the colder temps in January and February, I am a bit behind in planting the spring garden. But more on that later. Welcome to Saturday Meanderings where we chat about all good things this week. As I write this I am in Florida, visiting and gathering with my blogging friends.

All Things Lemon Class

This lemon-focused cooking class was last Saturday and 10 people attending. It is the first class I have conducted on my own and all in all, it went well. I will write a more detailed post about this as I want to share some of the recipes with you.

The morning was perfect weather-wise and everyone went home with lots of information on the beautiful lemon. It is fun to make your own preserved lemons, limoncello and tasting the likes of lemon tart and limoncello bundt cake.

New Wine Refrigerator

After 23 years, our ULine wine refrigerator died. In researching replacement of our ULine, my, have the prices gone up over the last two decades. A new ULine wine refrigerator is upward of $2500 ~ what? It did take a week or so to look at different wine refrigerator options, but we purchase a Kalamera 30 bottle single zone wine refrigerator from Wayfair….for $422.71.

I nearly read every comment as concerns include: noise, chilling ability and bottle capacity. Delivered this week, we are happy with this brand. It has a very cool blue night light and fits perfectly in the space.

Why Am I in Florida?

One of the nicest part of taking on blogging at this age, is that I am able to meet some truly wonderful women. I am part of a group (they are far smarter and successful bloggers!) of women who share their talents, technological information and tips on how to be better at this. If you attended the Fall Styling Workshop, you met Chloe (from Celebrate and Decorate) and Chas (Chas’ Crazy Creations.

Since we truly enjoy each other’s company, we try to get together 2-3 times per year. Chloe’s home in Celebration, Florida is so lovely and we are working hard and doing a bit of playing. I am enjoying photographing Chloe’s home and her sweet dog, Lily.

As you know, Chloe is the master of beautiful table settings so we are playing with these colorful dishes from Caskata. Aren’t they lovely?

New Haircut, finally!

In an attempt to grow my hair long (as requested by my sweet husband), I tried, I truly did. However, I didn’t find it flattering and finally got a haircut this week.

I’ve known my hairstylist longer than my husband and Roscoe, once again, does a great job. Roscoe Nichols at Pucci Salon in Scottsdale, Arizona.

We are Getting a New Puppy

For those of you who have been following me for awhile, know we lost our beloved Cooper in 2022 and our dedicated beagle, Sox last year. Losing two dogs who were best of friends has left a void in our family. Cooper, an Akbash was the perfect protector of our property.

In a few weeks we will be getting an Akbash puppy and here is the most recent picture of some of the litter. Aren’t they adorable?

Slow Cooking Liners

If you use your crockpot frequently, you may appreciate this product. I had no idea these existed but I believe they are productive on a few levels.

Slow cooking for many hours can result in burnt bottoms of your crockpot. These liners help prevent that and keeps the pot clean.

Occasionally I will make a slow cooker meal and want to deliver it to a family member or friend. How easy to grab the bag and transport the contents. It has been a very busy and productive week! Some unexpected projects are now complete and I feel like is has been a rich 7 days since our last Saturday Meanderings. Thank you for joining me today as we chat about all good things this week!

Valentine’s Day, Arizona’s Birthday, Ash Wednesday

This week is chock-a-block full of holidays, especially this past Wednesday. I hope you did something special on Valentine’s Day with either a spouse, friend, children or the myriad of people in our lives that we love. Typically we host a Valentine dinner party, but this year, it is just my husband and I, which actually felt extra special.

Delicious steaks, arugula salad (with fresh arugula from a neighbor’s garden) with a lemon vinaigrette, roasted cauliflower for two made the perfect VD dinner.

February 14th is also Arizona’s state birthday, now 112 years old. Our home was built in 1912, the same year Arizona became a state. What makes this interesting for us is that the owner of our home at that time, Everett Ellinwood was also integral in writing the Arizona constitution and actually ran for the first governor’s seat (and lost).

In the Christian tradition, Ash Wednesday, also on February 14th this year, marks the start of the holy season of Lent, a time for reflection and repentance in preparation for the celebration of Easter. Needless to say a very busy holiday week.

Painting Project

I did spend last weekend painting the art room in Dunn Edwards Cottage White. With an entire gallon in my paint stash, it would be wasteful not to use it. The trim (baseboards, crown molding, window and fireplace) are already painted Cottage White so getting the walls to be the same color is an easy decision.

Goodbye goldenrod yellow and hello creamy white. Honestly, I did like having color on the walls but for my art room, where I will be hopefully painting more, the walls are much brighter. I will do a full post on the re-do once the room is all put together.

My Stuffed Hen painting

In removing all the canvases from the art room, I find some of my earlier paintings that are, shall I say, a bit rough. At one first year art class, I took an old shedding stuffed rooster (not even sure how it is in my possession) and attempted to paint it with a bowl of eggs.

Instead of tossing it or painting over it, this original is perfect for the hen house! I put it under glass because the hen house gets a bit dusty with all the hay. It looks nice in its new home.

Spring is in the Air

Even though the mornings here are so chilly, the days are getting warmer. The first sign of spring in our yard is when the peach tree puts out its first blooms.

In addition the birds (and the bees) are out in force. Even though I mentioned this before, you must get the Merlin Bird ID app by Cornell Laboratories. It is completely free and you can record the bird sounds in your yard, or when you travel, and a list of birds magically appears on your phone.

Spring Garden

Just yesterday, I finally removed all the frost protection from my garden beds. Our mornings are still nippy but I am hoping we are past freezing temperatures. Some surprises~my huge tomato plants sustained frost damage on the top, but many healthy green branches and leaves remain. When I last checked, the tomatoes were green and growing. Look how many have started ripening now!

Our winter tomatoes are not as flavorful as the spring/summer ones, but they are certainly better than anything you can find in the grocery store! Looking forward to cleaning out the old and planting new for the spring.

Why Do My Hardboiled Eggs have a Green Ring around the Yolk

I love following Lisa, from Fresh Eggs Daily. She lives in Maine, raises chickens and ducks, has written 6 books and hosts her own television show. When I have a chicken question I generally will search her website for an answer.

Mary’s Must Haves and Updates

Lately I am focusing on natural health remedies. I don’t know about you but I am so tired of all those pharmaceutical commercials advertising a pill or vaccine for everything (and hearing the litany of bad side effects). Granted, some medications necessary, but when did we become a society where we believe a pill cures everything?

Please know I am not referring to serious illnesses here. I am a believer that the world is full of germs and viruses and we should be taking a more active role in building our own immune systems.

Living on a 112 year old property, I think many of our original plants and trees were sourced, not only for their beauty, but possibly for their medicinal value.

Olive Leaf Extract

In doing some research, I discover that the leaves of olive trees can be used as an extract, tea or powder. We have lots of olive trees and am drying the leaves for tea. However, you can purchase the extract~which has the amazing benefits:

The antioxidants in olive leaf extract are mainly polyphenols. From WebMD: Scientists believe these plant-based nutrients play a role in preventing conditions like cognitive decline, cancer, and osteoporosis, heart disease, and Parkinson’s. This extract also lower blood sugar and helps prevent LDL (bad) cholesterol from building up in your arteries. Olive leaf extract may also reduce the severity and duration of upper respiratory infections. It has anti-inflammatory, anti-viral and anti-microbial effects. Wow.

Surprisingly, I’ve never heard of this before now. Olive leaf extract comes in both liquid and capsule form. I am taking 20 drops (recommended is 30-40 drops) in a glass of water daily to see if it improves my cholesterol level and my cognitive functions. Over time, I will work my way up to more drops; I don’t mind the taste either.

Naturally if you have any underlying health issues, always consult your physician before taking any supplement.

Soil Test Kit

I never used to test our soil before planting my garden. Using our own compost (see that post here) seems to suffice, but I find when I do a soil test, I am a bit surprised by the results.

My recommendation is getting a soil testing kit is well worth it. My Soil Testing Kit is 17% off at $29.99 right now on Amazon. Whether you are planting now or in a few months, you may want to consider getting one. It takes about a week to get a report after you have sent in your soil samples.

Queen of Hungary’s water Update

As mentioned before, I did buy Karen’s Botanicals Queen of Hungary’s water. First of all, there is a very strong vinegar smell. In some of the reviews, users indicate if you make it yourself, there is more of a rose water scent.

However, I must say my skin feels very clean and tightened after use. Instead of using both morning and evening, I am only using it in the evening. The description of the product states that it restores the pH of the skin and it helps improve dryness, flakiness and inflammation. Since using it (about a month), my skin feels great. Will it help me look decades younger? Time will tell. Wouldn’t that be nice!

Even though the ground hog states we are getting an early spring, it still feels like winter here~cold, rainy, and windy. Baby Chicks

After 3 plus weeks in a cage on the breakfast room table, the 15 new chickens are ready to go out to the hen house. Baby chicks are so cute the first week or so, but by week 3 they get a little fragrant.

Since we designed the hen house (see hen house post here) to have a separate section for new chickens, we did some work this week getting it ready for their arrival.

In this section of the hen house, all the hay is removed and the floor, roosting perch and laying boxes are thoroughly cleaned using a steam cleaner. This small portable one is perfect for this task. To learn more about this steam cleaner, click here.

Now clean and with fresh hay, half of the hen house is ready for the new flock. Of course their first night the temperatures dropped to freezing, but with the help of heat lamps, the chicks stay cozy.

Piano Lessons

Yes, it is true I am taking piano lessons. Years ago, I took a few lessons with our children’s piano teacher, Miss Eva. She is so remarkable, as a vibrant 85 year old. Am hoping that learning musical notes, scales and scores will keep my brain healthy.

We have a beautiful piano and it will be nice to use it again.

Unscheduled Project

The sitting room off of the master bedroom and home office has been a makeshift art studio for me (see that blog post here). Located on one end of the room is a rather large day bed, purchased many years ago. Is it ever used? No. But trying to get it out of this relatively small room is a complete pain in the butt.

For some reason this week, I decide I want this day bed out. In doing so, I realize this room is a mess. It’s time to repaint the walls, clear out the clutter and try to make it a real office/art studio for me. Have you ever started a project and wish you hadn’t?

Now the enormous day bed is sitting in our upstairs hall as we debate what to do with it. Since it’s hardly been used it is in excellent condition.

In the meantime I will paint goldenrod colored walls to something more neutral this weekend. Hope to show you some good before and after photos soon.

For the Face…

I have mentioned this product before and I did reorder it this week. Colorscience Total Protection Brush-on Sunscreen is something I use EVERY day. In lieu of face powder, I brush this on and enjoy the SPF 50 protection.

Yes, it is not an inexpensive sunscreen but the last time I ordered this was January 2023~13 months ago. If you amortize the cost over time, the initial price of $69.00 ($65.55 if you subscribe), equals approximately 17 cents per day. A bargain to protect your skin from sunspots or worse, skin cancer. I have never seen it on sale either. It comes in multiple skin tone colors. You can find it here.

Speaking of taking care of your skin, my dermatologist recommend I use La Roche-Posay Vitamin C anti-aging face serum to visibly brighten and smooth uneven skin tone and those dastardly wrinkles. Groan. After using her sample packets I just received my first bottle of serum this week. Hoping for good results.

Does anyone use a Vitamin C serum? I sure miss those days when I only used soap and water on my face.

For the Body

I exercise 5 days a week always live in yoga pants and workout tops. Truly, my inventory is old and so pathetic. Instead of looking like a ragamuffin, I finally purchase 3 new pairs of yoga pants in plum, olive green and blue. A bit of a color is a stretch for me as I tend to wear black and gray.

I am sporting the plum ones as I write this post and I like them~especially the high. thick waist and the pocket for your phone. Great color selection and are on sale (17% off) at a reasonable $24.99. They are very comfortable and hopefully will wash well. Makes me feel a bit dressed up! Ha!

Last Saturday, one of my subscribers, Corrine, commented about using Vital Proteins and how they have helped her. Do you supplement your diet with collagen peptides? Barrett-Jackson

On Sunday, we spend the day at the Barrett-Jackson collector car auction. Widely regarded as a barometer of the collector car industry, this auction has evolved over the world’s most sought-after, unique and valuable automobiles that are sold to a global audience ‒ in person and on live national and international television. 

Really. It is quite an astounding eventswith cars ranging from futuristic prototypes to antique relics. I had my eye on a Land Rover Woody Electric D90~which is a blend of classic and modern. The wood is inspired by the 1940s woody station wagons with the design staying true to the classic Land Rover shape. I actually thought I could see myself driving this….and then we checked the price. $325,000. Choke. Heart attack. Oh well. A gal can dream.

One SUV even has a Nespresso machine with 2 insulated cups and the pods built into the back seat console…now that’s what I need!

Baby Chicks

We are the new proud parents of 15 baby chickens. With only 5 mature chickens and one duck currently in the hen house, it is time to raise another flock. Due to their size and the cold weather, the little chirpers are in a cage on the breakfast room table, equipped with a heat lamp, food and water.

They are at the eat.sleep.poop stage so the cage needs to be cleaned daily. Our cat, Donovan is VERY interested and we are hoping he gets bored with their presence quickly. The chickens will stay inside until they are about a month old.

It must be feathered friend week because look who is out by the pool on one very rainy afternoon. It’s that time of year where the ducks pick their partners and baby ducklings will soon follow.

Valentine’s Day decorations

It’s is time to get rid of the winter decor by the front door and just adding this bit of pink makes me happy. The sweet blush cable throw is an old purchase from Target, but here is one from Macy’s that is very pretty and on sale for$23.99.

The heart pillow is again from Target (no longer available), but I actually prefer these blush pillows from Amazon, as they are pretty but not seasonal.

A new front door wreath is on its way and once it’s up, I’ll take pictures.

Queen of Hungary’s Water

Have you ever heard of Queen of Hungary’s Water? Some say that it was created for the aging Queen Elizabeth of Hungary by an alchemist in the 1300s to restore her youthfulness. According to the legend, it reversed her appearance so much that the 25-year-old grand-duke of Lithuania asked for her hand in marriage when she was 70! 

Even though I would like to make my own (12 different herbs steeped in vinegar for 4-6 weeks), I find one from Karen’s Botanicals out of Taylorsville, Georgia.

Two Classes in February

This week I sent an invitation to a spontaneous Valentine Cookie Decorating class that will occur next Saturday, February 3, 2024 from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. (may end sooner) here at Bella Terra. The All Things Lemon class will occur on Saturday, February 24, 2024 from 10:00 a.m. to noon. In this class we will learn how to make Preserved Lemons, Limoncello and a lemon surprise (to be determined). Depending on the weather, we will gather on the outside, covered back terrace so seating is limited. Now is the perfect time of year to use all the freshly picked lemons and learn new recipes together.

What Are You Reading?

Elin Hildebrand

When I read that Elin Hildebrand (known as the Queen of Beach Reads) is retiring from writing in 2024 (according to a statement made in 2021), I decide to read every single one of her 33 books. The setting for most of Elin’s novels is Nantucket. I just finished Summerland, The Identicals, and Barefoot.

My reason for liking most of Elin’s books is that I seek a book that is written well, smart, fun, and engrossing, but not too heavy, too serious or dark. Perhaps it’s my reason to escape all the horrors going on in the real world.

Reader’s Digest has a list of Elin Hildebrand’s books in order which I need to reference and mark as I go.

Nita Prose

Number #1 on the New York Times Bestseller list and a Good Morning America bookclub pick, I so enjoyed The Maid by Nita Prose. My friend, Christine is reading A Girl Called Samson and is thoroughly enjoying it. Downloaded, it is on my list to read.
