A Meaningful Memorial Day: Tablescapes, Decor and Delicious Inspiration

Memorial Day is just around the corner! This holiday conjures up so many beginning-of-summer memories for me. Growing up in Connecticut, the end of May marked the start of better, warmer weather with longer days, a fashion thumbs up to wear white, our town’s Memorial Day parade and the end of school. Memorial Day marks the unofficial start of summer, but more importantly, it’s a day of remembrance—for honoring those who gave their lives in service to our country. Whether you’re hosting a backyard gathering, a picnic, or a dinner at home, incorporating thoughtful, patriotic details into your tablescape, decor, and food can help set the tone for a day that’s both celebratory and respectful.

Tablescape Ideas: Red, White and Beautiful

  • Color Palette: Start with a crisp white tablecloth or natural linen as your base. Layer in pops of red and navy with napkins, chargers, or even vintage plates.

With a simple red checkered table cloth, you can add these navy with stars paper placements from Hester & Cook for a strong patriotic look.

  • Centerpieces: Use small American flags tucked into mason jars filled with seasonal blooms like peonies, daisies, or blue hydrangeas. For a rustic feel, arrange the flowers in galvanized metal buckets or wooden crates.

With this centerpiece, I place patriotic pinwheels and American flags into faux geraniums and greens. You can use these pinwheels again for July 4th or Labor Day too.

  • Place Settings: Tie individual silverware bundles with red-and-white ribbon or twine and tuck in a sprig of rosemary or a mini flag. Use kraft paper tags for place cards—simple and charming.

For this place setting, I use a red and white Hester & Cook striped paper runner on an old pine table, vintage Rowland & Marsellus blue and white plates on white chargers, red/white/blue carnations and lots of smaller American flags. Finish with a pretty vintage linen napkin with blue embroidery.

Decor that Honors and Inspires

  • Flag Display: Elevate the American flag to a place of honor—on the front porch, in a garden planter, or as a framed focal point indoors.

You can easily make your own patriotic flag garland with either decorative paper or fabric. See this easy DIY post here.

  • Memory Table: Consider a small, dedicated table with a framed quote about freedom, a candle, and a photo or name list honoring service members—especially if your family has a personal connection.
  • Outdoor Touches: String red, white, and blue bunting along fences, railings, or outdoor tables. Hang star garlands or festive paper lanterns from tree branches or pergolas.

Memorial Day Menu: Simple, Fresh and Festive

  • Appetizers: Mini flag toothpicks in sliders or a red-white-and-blue bruschetta bar (think tomatoes, mozzarella, and blueberries with balsamic glaze) add flair without fuss.

If you are making a charcuterie tray, adding star- shaped cheese pieces add a festive, holiday touch.

For a Memorial Day brunch, there are so many ways to make this delicious breakfast selection look patriotic.

Brunch items on a board
  • Mains: Classic fare like grilled burgers, marinated chicken skewers, or BBQ pulled pork. Offer a vegetarian option like grilled portobello burgers or corn-stuffed peppers.
  • Sides: Patriotic pasta salad with cherry tomatoes, blueberries, and feta; watermelon and mint salad.
  • Desserts: Flag fruit skewers, berry shortcake with whipped cream, or a trifle layered with strawberries, blueberries, and angel food cake.

I can honestly say this American flag cake is a bear to make, but the response from your guests will be worth it. Here is the recipe for those who want a challenge.

By adding star sprinkles or American flags, you can dress up an ordinary cupcake into an easy patriotic dessert. These zucchini cupcakes with cream cheese frosting are healthy option. Putting them into these cute baking cups, steps up your game.

  • Drinks: Serve lemonade or iced tea in mason jars, with berry ice cubes or fresh herb garnishes. For adults, consider a signature cocktail like a berry mojito or spiked Arnold Palmer.

Typically we go to our cabin for Memorial Day, however, we are staying in town and attending a funeral service for a dear friend. Whatever you have planned, please pause and give thanks to those brave men and women who sacrificed their lives so we can enjoy our everyday freedoms.
