Saturday Meanderings

Hard to believe it was rainy and cold for the Easter weekend, but today, it is sunny and warm, the perfect Spring day. Trees are budding, birds are singing and love is in the air. A sure sign of the season is seeing ducks around in our swimming pool as the female chooses her mate. Here in Phoenix we pray for more days like this because we know that blistering temperature will be heading our way in a few months. Welcome to the first Saturday Meanderings of April, where we chat about all good things this past week. I really appreciate you joining me today with a cup of your favorite beverages while reading this.

Easter Brunch table

Easter Recap

As I mentioned earlier, the wet weather prevented us from having a meal in the palm orchard, but the covered back terrace is the perfect place to gather out of the elements. With a fire going in the fireplace and the outdoor and space heaters on, twelve of us sit down to brunch.

Lots of bunnies at the table

Before our meal, however, is the annual Easter egg hunt. The Easter bunny places 521 plastic eggs (yes, he counted them this year), with 200 of the eggs filled with money. Though a bit wet and muddy, the children (now well into adulthood) fiercely compete to see who is get the most eggs and hopefully the most cash.

Hunting for eggs

It is a very competitive, almost a contact sport but we’ve yet to see any physical injuries as they fill the wicker baskets provided. After the hunt, we start our Easter brunch on the covered back terrace, Spinach and goat cheese quiches, honey baked ham, green salad, fresh fruit, waffle bar and mimosas are on tap. Dessert is the annual lamb cake and limoncello bundt cake. Of course, I did not take pictures. Sigh.

My son, in Chicago, makes his official lamb cake and it is much better than mine! If you don’t follow him on Instagram, you may want to @crozier_cooks. Obviously I didn’t grease my lamb cake mold well enough because the cake did not come out cleanly.

Benjamin’s lamb cake @crozier_cooks

But after some reconstructive surgery and a lot of frosting, here is my lamb cake. Sorry for the awful picture with the messy kitchen in the background. It was a busy day…

My lamb cake

This is a perfect example where the student clearly outperforms the teacher! So proud of his creation.

It is a big day for Finn and he equally loves his stuffed bunny and chicken, snoozing through most of the festivities.

Finn and his honey bunny

Speaking of Finn, he also had his first wellness check at the vet. As you can see, he is not too bothered by the experience!

Spring Flowers

As cold as it was last weekend, on Thursday, it was 85 degrees. The temperature is supposed to drop again this weekend, but the warmer intervals are encouraging the flowers to blossom.

Irises are blooming

Hollyhocks are just showing their pretty blooms too.

Using Rangpurs

My dear friend, Dr. Ryan Krch delivered a bag of rangpurs from his dad’s tree. Rangpurs, sometimes called the rangpur lime, mandarin lime or lemandarin, is a hybrid between the mandarin orange and the citron. It is a citrus fruit with a very acidic taste and an orange peel and flesh. The peel is a bit baggy, like a mandarin.

Rangpurs

Back in 2020, I made a lemon meringue pie using Ryan’s rangpurs (see that post here). This time, I adapt a recipe from The Kitchen McCabe substituting lemon juice with rangpur juice, making individual rangpur tarts.

Individual rangpur tarts

Using a defrosted store-bought pie crust and these sweet individual tart pans, this recipe is rather easy and tasty. Toasting the meringue topping with this small culinary blow torch gives the dessert a professional touch. Note: there are many different types of culinary torches and depending on your budget and use, read the ratings to select the one that best serves your purpose.

Rangpur tartlets

My tartlet pans are 4″ wide by 1.25″, however, I purchased them a long time ago and cannot remember the source. The ones on Amazon are not as tall, but I think they will work equally as well. Webstaurant has one the same size as mine and you can find it here.

The rangpur curd is so unexpectedly different and the dessert is a success.

New Curtains

Our master bathroom is deserving of a total make-over but as I save up for this big project, the curtains in the bathtub nook need replacing. I go to my list of respected resources, but when did the price of curtain panels go up?

Since I am looking for a temporary fix until I fully determine the future new look of the bathroom, I don’t want to spend a lot of money. I find these linen curtains on Amazon for less than $40 for 2 panels, which come in 11 colors and multiple lengths!

Curtain Photo on Amazon

Not expecting the best quality, I am very surprised when the curtains arrive. Yes, they are linen and even though the background is more natural vs. white, they are quite pretty. They let the light through but provide some privacy to the outside.

Bathtub nook curtains

Since I ordered the wrong length, I will need to hem them, but other than that, I am quite pleased with the quality at such a low price. They do have grommets (not my favorite attachment method), but for an interim curtain, it will do. Or I can hem them from the top and add with a pocket for the rod or a way to attach hooks.

From the Internet

The Crowned Goat

I don’t know about you, but for me, Spring is the time to open the windows, and switch things up a bit to welcome the new season. Simple tasks such as reorganizing a hutch or shelves can give a room a fresh, new look. CoCo from The Crowned Goat has Eight Easy Tips for Styling a Dining Room Hutch. Don’t have a hutch? Her tips can be used anywhere you have a set of shelves. Plus her photos are just dreamy.

Pinecones and Acorns

When the weather gets warmer, I dream about finding the perfect, easy casual dress to wear. However, being on the shorter side (5’4″), some dresses with voluminous fabric make me look like a sack of potatoes. So, I spend time looking but making never making a decision. Elizabeth from Pinecones and Acorns shares a collection of spring dresses in various patterns and silhouettes.

If anyone has had success in finding a pretty, affordable, spring dress please let me know. Seriously, I look every year and don’t buy anything.

Celebrate and Decorate Spring Home Tour

Many of you met my sweet friend, Chloe Crabtree, at our Fall Styling Workshop last year. You have often heard me rave about her beautiful home in Celebration, Florida. Now you can see it too. Chloe graciously welcomes you into her home with her recently posted video Spring Home tour.

Mary’s Must Haves

Boho blouse

As the weather gets warmer, I am ready for long sleeve blouses vs. jackets. An affordable favorite (truly, I get compliments every time I wear it), is this boho, loose blouse that is currently 24% off on Amazon, at $27.99. It comes in 20 different colors/patterns and I currently own two of them. Launders easily and still looks good a few years later.

I am in the market for a new belt and good quality t-shirts. Each summer I try and buy a new white one, but lately, it seems the fabric is so sheer (what’s that about?). If anyone has a resource for the perfect t-shirt (crew neck) and a good quality belt, please let me know.

Well, that’s a wrap! Trying to get all of Easter put away, doing some spring cleaning projects and gardening this weekend. Wishing you a relaxing and happy weekend!

Inspiration for your Easter weekend

Can you believe Easter is this coming Sunday, the last day of March? After having two VERY busy weeks, I am now finally shifting my focus to my Easter/Spring decorations and the holiday meal. Will you be hosting friends and family for dinner? We are expecting about 10 for an Easter brunch after we attend sunrise services at church. Today’s post is inspiration for your Easter weekend~ from easy Easter DIYs to family traditions at the table. If your children are on spring break, some of these ideas would be fun to keep them busy and entertained.

Easter place cards

Decoupage Easter Eggs

With a plethora of pretty seasonal paper napkins and hand towels, you can easily make these decoupage Easter eggs with your children or grandchildren. All you need are neutral colored eggs~either plastic, wooden or actual eggs, Mod Podge, paper napkins, and a paint brush. If you are using real eggs, you can find instructions on how to do this here.

Decoupage Easter eggs

What’s nice about these decoupage eggs, is that they keep from year to year and you can use them in a multitude of ways. This sweet lady bunny has a space for an egg on her yellow coat.

One of my favorite Easter items

Or in a basket of straw as an Easter/Spring decoration or part of someone’s Easter basket.

Easter display

Of course, you can use your decoupage eggs at your Easter dinner table too!

A Spring table

Think of all the possibilities depending on the color and style of your napkin! To see the complete post on How to Decoupage Easter eggs, click here.

Making Easter Nests~a fun DIY project

The joy of spring brings new nests all over our property. Instead of using real nests (not sure how sanitary that would be at the dinner table), I make faux nests. Back in 2020, I use Royal Worcester soup bowls at my Easter dinner table. However, the table is lacking something. So I whip up these cute nests using items I readily have on hand.

Faux nests for the Easter dinner table

Since I have never made these before, it is fun to experiment and try something new. The supplies are simple~shredded paper (from our paper shredder but you can use whatever you have), Mod Podge, disposable styrofoam bowls, a few colors of spray paint, glue and moss.

Don’t they look so pretty on the Easter table?

Easter Table Ideas

If you haven’t starting setting your table for Easter, here is a plethora of ideas from centerpieces to place cards. Today I will be going through the Easter boxes in the garage to come up with a theme for our table this Sunday. It’s a bit like Christmas because I seem to forget year to year what I have collected over time. We hope to set a table outdoors (weather providing) in the palm orchard, like we have the last few years.

Easter outside 2023

Many of my Easter pieces come with wonderful memories. My dear friend, Gwen, gave me these porcelain lamb napkin rings over 30 years ago.

The Easter menu

Since we will be having a brunch, it will be easy to serve a homemade quiche, both green and fruit salad, hot cross buns and perhaps a smoked ham (husband is figuring that out).

Spinach and goat cheese quiches

The hot cross buns are so tasty, however, I am still struggling with getting the crosses correct. Here’s the recipe from Sally’s Baking Recipes, as I have good luck with her content. The crosses are made with a flour/water concoction and orange icing is added after baking.

Hot cross buns before putting in the oven

The annual family dessert is a lamb cake. Easter lamb cake (known as agnuszek or baranek wielkanocny in Polish) is a traditional Eastern European dessert. As a child, I looked forward to my mother making this for Easter as it signaled the beginning of Spring.

To read more about this cake, check out the original post here.

Traditional Easter cake

Please share what you are doing for Easter and any family traditions you enjoy. Happy last week of March! I cannot wait to share pictures of our newest family member, a 9 week old Akbash puppy. More to come on that, but have a glorious week!

St. Patrick’s Day Table~Green and Gold for Luck

Even though we are not of Irish decent, we celebrate St. Patrick’s Day, March 17th, because it is the birthday of my daughter, Julianna and my mother, Julia. That, in itself, is a good reason to set a St. Patrick’s Day Table. However, who is St. Patrick and why is this holiday celebrated around the world?

Cheerful green and gold

A Little History

St. Patrick’s Day is celebrated annually on March 17, the anniversary of his death in the fifth century. The Irish observe this day as a religious holiday and have so for over 1,000 years.

Image from Irish Central

St. Patrick is the patron saint of Ireland and its national apostle. Born in Roman Britain, he was kidnapped from his home and brought to Ireland as a slave at the age of 16. He later escaped, but returned to Ireland and was credited with bringing Christianity to its people.

Mixing old and new

Mixing Old and New

For this year’s St. Patrick’s Day table, I am using this fun piece of contemporary fabric from my friend, Anne. I couple it with my antique English china, Fondeville Ambassador Ware 6762. The rich shades of green, gold, pink, blue and yellow make these gold-rim plates one of my favorites.

To me, this is the essence of collected chic~mixing bold patterns with elegant tableware.

Leslie Roy clear salad plate with gold edge

Stacking the antique china on the simple brushed gold chargers enhances the gold in the pattern. Adding the crackled gold rim clear salad plate from Leslie Roy does not diminish the platter floral design. Similar chargers can be found here. These chargers are so affordable and I use them frequently.

Most adaptable flatware

Of course, I love my Wallace silver/gold bee patterned flatware (see link here) which seems to go with just about any place setting I create. The combination of green and gold in this setting lends to the luck of the Irish!

Irish crystal Waterford glasses

Made in Waterford, Ireland, the Waterford crystal Marquis water goblets and Lismore wine glasses are in keeping with the Irish theme. Gold trim napkins softly fold and find a home inside the wine glass. See similar napkins here.

Making it Festive

A bit of shamrock whimsy

With a fun and festive holiday like St. Patrick’s Day, it is easy for the table decor to become kitschy or juvenile. Trying to keep the table elegant, but fun, I add gold shamrocks to the tablecloth. Since I bought these several years ago, resource unknown, you can use gold coins instead.

A trinket for your guests

Each place setting gets a light up shamrock necklace for added whimsy for our guests. See similar necklace here.

West Elm candlesticks

The Centerpiece

Brass candlesticks from West Elm brighten up the table. Set up in our family and surrounded by windows, the table changes color as the day progresses.

Milk glass footed bowl

The centerpiece is a vintage Westmoreland oval footed milk glass bowl with hydrangeas, peonies and green glitter shamrocks. Again, the glittery shamrocks are fun but the centerpiece still looks elegant. The shape is the perfect size for this round table.

Will you be celebrating St. Patrick’s Day? My daughter will be 27 years old and my mother, if alive, would be celebrating her 99th. Time marches on, doesn’t it?

Wishing you all a happy Wednesday.

Saturday Meanderings

Happy February, Groundhog Day and welcome to the first Saturday Meanderings of this month. February 2024…wow. Who remembers the year 2000 like it was yesterday? That was 24 years ago! As life continues to just fly on by, my attempt at slow living is truly failing. Here we are with another month starting and it’s time to chat about all good things this week for Saturday Meanderings.

My Valentine painting

Add Touches of Pink

This week, I am adding touches of pink to the house to celebrate the month of love. I treat myself to a new wreath for the front door from TwoInspireYou. I first found them initially on Etsy and they make wreaths of various widths. With a 4 foot wide front door, standard wreaths look a bit puny so it nice that they create wreaths up to 30 inches wide.

New wreath for February

These are not inexpensive wreaths, but they are a very good quality and last a long time. I purchased an autumn wreath from them several years ago and it looks as good as the day I received it. Granted, you need to store them properly, but I find these wreaths a good, long term investment.

Yarn hearts for a Valentine touch

The pink peony wreath with greenery comes in a hot pink, paler pink or a white flower. For Valentine’s Day, I add a few yarn hearts to pick up the colors from the nearby lighter pink geraniums. A few pots of more pink geraniums are in the wicker basket on my blue beach cruiser.

Flowers in the bike basket

Fireplace Garland

Do you remember the Valentine’s garland I made a few years ago? That’s up this week on both the dining room and breakfast room fireplace mantels.

Yarn heart garland on the dining room mantel

What’s nice about this garland is that once you make it, you can use it year to year. Paper heart garland DIY here. Yarn heart garland DIY here. Each year I try and mix it up with something else-like this pearl button garland.

Paper heart garland on the breakfast room mantel

Why not find a fun or unusual container to hold your heart-shaped candies? This Cambridge Rose Point footed mayonnaise bowl with etched depression glass is from the 1920s. I never use it for mayonnaise so may as well use it here.

1920 Mayonnaise bowl holding Valentine candies

Are you putting up any decorative touches for Valentine’s Day?

More Progress

This week I am able to check off 3 items on the 2024 Small Project List~woohoo! Though I cannot take credit for this one, I am thrilled that our side green gate near the rose garden is finally painted. It looks so nice and fresh. A relatively easy project with a great impact! Though the picture doesn’t reflect that actual deep and rich blackish green of the door, it still looks good!

Valentine Cookie Decorating Class

The class is full and we will be creating gorgeous Valentine cookies today! I’m a little worried about the weather because the temperatures have dipped out of the pleasant 70s to the 50s. But we have heaters on the back terrace so hopefully everyone will be comfortable. Will take lots of pictures and share with you next week.

From the Internet

I just discovered Drew Michael Scott from Lone Fox Home on Instagram. Truth be told, I try not to spend any time on my phone unless I have to, but this young man is so incredibly talented I watch all his videos. He recently purchased a 1929 small Spanish style home and on a budget and with amazing creativity, he is transforming it into a one of a kind living space.

@lonefoxhome

He finds bargains on Facebook Marketplace and has a great eye for detail. What I like is that he is true to his taste and not following the latest trends. Drew is an inspiration as his ideas and techniques are not typical, but very innovative. You can find him on Instagram @lonefoxhome (where you see him in action) or his website here (which sells his products).

Stacy Ling’s guide to flower gardens

My friend, Stacy from Bricks ‘n Blooms has written her FIRST book and it will be releasing on February 6th. Stacy is a phenomenal gardener and her flower beds are magazine worthy. Here’s what Amazon has to say about this book:

In this incredibly comprehensive and gorgeously photographed guide, master gardener Stacy Ling helps aspiring green thumbs achieve success with her easy-to-grow, easy-care, and low maintenance approach to growing beautiful flowers.

I have preordered mine and you can see it here. Let’s help out a budding new author and get lots of books sold! Fabulous gift to a gardener!

Shiplap and Shells Seed Viability Chart

Speaking of flowers and seeds, my sweet friend, Kim from Shiplap and Shells shares a recent post on the viability of seeds. If you are like me, I try and plant seeds that I find several years later and wonder why they didn’t grow? See Kim’s informative Flower Seed Viability Chart here.

Twinings Earl Grey tea with lavender

Lately, in the afternoon I am enjoying a hot cup of tea. However, I am unable to find this tea on the supermarket shelves. It is available online and I highly recommend it. Twining Earl Grey with Lavender is delicious. Of course I add a few things like honey, a small amount of vanilla extract before I steep the tea bag in hot water. Then I top it with some steamed oat milk (any milk with do). You can find this yummy tea here.

First Saturday Lime

First Saturday Lime

Even though I have shared this before, I cannot say enough good things about this product. It is the ONLY thing that gets rid of those nasty worms that eat my geraniums. It was probably over a year ago I first applied it and didn’t see one worm for months. The package recommends you apply it monthly and First Saturday Lime is a healthy alternative to pesticides.

A reel on IG about these annoying worms

Plus this product does many things~ from increasing soil pH to turning hydrangeas pink. You can use it with horses, chickens and even as a whitewash. Pretty amazing and a 20 lb bag runs about $32.00. If you follow me on Instagram @lifeatbellaterra, I did a reel this week demonstrating how I use this product. You can find it here.

Perfect Hostess Gift

Cocktail shaker set by Zulay

If you are looking for a Valentine gift or hostess gift for February, isn’t this an attractive cocktail shaker set? I own a few products from this company and so far the quality and performance has been great. This entire set is only $24.99 and includes a 24 oz. shaker with a built-in strainer, a double sided jigger and a muddler mixing spoon. See it here.

Help for my Knee

The Coldest knee ice pack

Decades ago, due to a bad skiing accident, I severed my ACL and significantly injured the other two ligaments in my left knee. Three surgeries and a full year recovery, I am happy to say I do not walk with a limp. However, lately my knee is slightly swollen and creating a bit of a fuss.

I am looking at this ice pack wrap as perhaps a solution to minimize the pain. Does anyone use a product like this? Coldest Knee Ice Pack Wrap can be used for both hot and cold therapy. This reusable compression is best for Meniscus Tear, Injury Recovery, Bursitis Pain Recovery, Sprains, Swelling and Rheumatoid Arthritis. It’s on my list of things to buy and you can find it here.

That’s a wrap! Have a beautiful weekend and whatever you do, stay warm and safe.

Saturday Meanderings

Can it possibly be mid-January already? I hope this year isn’t another one on fast-forward. All my efforts to slow time do not seem to be working. Happy Saturday to you and I hope this blog post finds you comfy and cozy. It is very cold here in Phoenix as we are not used to freezing morning temperatures very often. Let’s get started with Saturday Meanderings where we chat about all good things this week.

Figs are finished

Christmas and Holiday Decorations

The goal was to have all the decorations put away last weekend. However, a bulk of those decorations go into the Christmas room in the basement (see that post here). Monday morning I went to put the last of the boxes away and the Christmas room was flooded. In addition to storage, there are two 80 gallon water heaters in one corner. One of the water heaters split and hence the flooding. We also have flood alarms in the basement and even though one was under water, did it alert us? NO!

Door to the Christmas Room

By Wednesday, our plumber replaced the water heater (when did they become so expensive?). Clean up follows and we are now storing the balance of the boxes. There is always something that doesn’t go according to plan.

A Wildlife week

Cooper on patrol

Since our big dog, Cooper passed away, we are experiencing more wildlife in the yard. I don’t know if it was due to Cooper marking his territory, but we are seeing more critters. A few cute ones~bunnies and a cat who strolls around like he/she owns the place. However, I believe this display of small animals is also attracting a very large coyote.

Cooper, an Akbash

Cooper did a great job keeping coyotes out of the property, but they are back. I fear for the cat and bunny, but hoping they are very fast and good at hiding. Hard to believe we have coyotes, foxes, raccoons, bobcats, peccaries and various birds of prey in our relatively urban environment.

What’s in Bloom

Ornamental cabbages

In spite of the freezing temperatures, we still have things thriving and blooming. The ornamental cabbages planted in the fall look their best now, with their shades of purple and blue/green leaves. Lately I’ve been so drawn to the color purple, lavender and plum. Not sure what that is about but I checked online and it says it represents feeling a strong connection to spirituality. Hmm.

Even though lavender loves a warm climate, it is doing just fine in our cooler temperatures.

Lavender

Along the same colors as the lavender flower and sage colored leaves, is our Texas sage.

Texas Sage

In this new year, do you find yourself drawn to a specific color? In March 2018 I actually wrote a post on why we are drawn to color. It appears then, purple was the big attraction. How odd as it is not a color that is one of my favorites.

Soup Weather

It is the perfect time of year to make soup. This week I made chicken noodle soup from chicken bones and loosely referenced Half Baked Harvest’s recipe, Lemony Pesto Chicken Noodle Soup. Typically my stock consists of lots of bones/parts, onions, celery, carrots and seasoning. Once the stock has simmered for hours, I strain it and then add more chicken, vegetables, seasonings, noodles or rice or orzo.

My chicken soup with a twist

Normally, I don’t add lemon juice, fennel or pesto, but I must say, adding these ingredients elevates my chicken soup. Probably the best chicken soup I’ve ever created. If anyone makes the Half Baked Harvest recipe please let me know how it goes.

Chicken and Barley soup

You have heard me reference the Fast Metabolism Diet book. It has a Chicken and Barley soup recipe that is full of vegetables such as butternut squash, yellow summer squash, zucchini, broccoli and mushrooms. It is more of a stew vs. a soup because of the barley. I tend to season it more as I feel it’s on the bland side, but another great soup that sticks to your bones.

Artificial Intelligence

I am not sure how I feel about artificial intelligence, or AI. However, apparently the images below are created by AI. On one hand, I am amazed at what AI can do. On the other hand, like most things in life, there are those who will manipulate it. The long term impact is unknown but I see many jobs becoming obsolete as a result.

Technology is certainly changing the world.

Mary’s Must Haves

Aromatherapy blanket

Each night before bed, I heat up my microwaveable aromatherapy blanket and slip it in between my fitted and top sheet. Then I am off to wash my face, brush my teeth and get into my jammies. By the time I actually get into bed, my sheets are so nice and warm. Heavenly!

Sonoma Lavender Co. weighted blanket

This blanket measures 44″ x 18″ and weighs 5 lbs. The lavender scent helps promote relaxation. You can even freeze the insert to help alleviate muscle soreness. The removable cover is washable and oh so soft! It comes in 5 different colors/fabrics. See it here.

Cuccio Cuticle Oil

With the cold weather, my cuticles seem to get so dry. Again, a nighttime ritual is applying cuticle oil to soften and repair damaged cuticles. This particular one has over 121,000 views on Amazon with a 4.7 star rating. Not only does the 2.5 oz oil come fragrance-free, but also has 12 other fragrances to choose. Currently it is 38% off. See it here.

Rifle Paper Company gel pen set

There is something to be said for writing with a pretty pen. The Rifle Paper Company has such cheerful designs and I love this affordable set of gel pens in these happy colors. Whether you journal or just need a good-looking pen, here’s an affordable way to do so. Four Estee gel pens at $18.00~what a nice treat to yourself.

The link will take you to the home page of Rifle Paper and then click on the New Arrivals box. Scroll down about 8 rows and you will find it there.

Gaia Oil of Oregano capsules

For years, I have been using Oil of Oregano. Oregano oils have antioxidant, antifungal, and anti-inflammatory properties. These oils may also play a beneficial role in weight management and infection treatments. It’s a natural antibiotic and may improve gut health. The minute I feel a little off, I take it. When I travel or am surrounded by large crowds, I take it as a precautionary measure. This little gem is instrumental in keeping me healthy. Note: I do take it with food as it can upset an empty stomach.

Naturally always research products before you start taking them. Also make sure you are getting a high quality supplement. If you’re interested in taking oregano oil extract but currently taking prescription medications, make sure to consult your healthcare professional before adding it to your regimen.

That’s a wrap! Have a terrific weekend. Stay healthy and warm!
