Welcome to the first Saturday Meanderings of 2024. I am really excited about this even numbered year. This week is turning out to be a very productive one, and I am thoroughly enjoying the last of the 12 days of Christmas, which is today, January 6th, the Epiphany. My Daughter’s Birthday

Today is my youngest child, Elisabeth’s 23rd birthday. She and her friends are celebrating at our cabin in the snowy mountains of Arizona. When I asked her about a birthday cake, she replies, “oh, I will just pick one up at the grocery store.” Wait? What? After years of a homemade birthday cake, well that is just unacceptable to me. After determining her favorite cake flavor is chocolate, I start planning to make a cake that would be transportable in a long car drive.

My favorite go-to cake cookbook is Layered by Tessa Huff. This dog-eared, food stained book has been well used over the years. I try a new recipe for her birthday celebration~a Black Forest cake. Four layers of sour cream chocolate cake with heritage frosting and cherry chocolate ganache between the layers, milk chocolate buttercream frosting on the outside with chocolate shavings and fresh cherries on top.

Because of the height of the cake, most cake carriers will not work. However, a last minute trip to Walmart, I am able to find this carrier with the proper clearance. The base of the carrier flips so you can use it for cakes or cupcakes. Now, I just hope the cake makes the car trip and is as delicious as all the spoons and bowls I licked.

New Product to Keep on Hand

We often have guests dropping by unexpectedly and we like to be able to offer up an appetizer. I discover this during the holidays and they are perfect with a glass or wine or champagne. Imagine freshly baked French cheese puffs that are ready in 25 minutes! Shipped to you frozen, an order includes 36 of these delicious cheese puffs.

I just received my second order of Bougie Gougies and love having them available in the freezer when I need them. Each box has 36 cheese puffs. They are a bit pricey, but you are paying for the convenience. Now my goal is to learn to make these. Has anyone made gougères from scratch?

Instead of an evening New Year’s gathering, we decide to do a brunch this year. As I age, I find myself wanting to go to bed earlier and late nights are suffered the next day. I serve the tried and true brunch recipes of my egg casserole, blueberry coffee cake, and a fruit salad (without the unripened cantaloupe). In addition, I try a new recipe of Spiced Dark Chocolate Cherry Saltine Toffee (recipe below) and a Coconut Mojito cake (from the Layered book mentioned above).

Daily Planner Week 1

In my post earlier this week, I share my new daily planner and annual calendar. It is so nice to get back on track and I can report that everything that I tasked myself with this week I accomplished! So far it is working!

In addition to using a planner, each day I am trying to keep ahead of my email in-box. At the end of December, I had nearly 10,000 emails in my inbox….mostly junk. Daily I am taking 30 minutes and cleaning and purging. Does anyone else have this problem?

Frost Warnings

This next week it will be quite cold in Phoenix. I believe the City’s temperature reading comes from Sky Harbor Airport and our property is approximately 6 to 9 degrees cooler. When you see those astronomical summer temperatures, it is mainly due to all the concrete and tarmacs surrounding the airport. Since we have so much vegetation here and in our surrounding neighborhood, it’s important to pay attention to the weather forecast.

My garden is covered with Christmas lights and a layer of protection. Since my garden greens and tomato plants are so abundant right now and I’m taking extra precautions.

Mary’s Must Haves

I don’t know if it the cold weather or I’m exerting muscles in a different way, but I am using Arnicare Gel frequently. This homeopathic topical gel, is quickly absorbed, non-greasy, fragrance-free and helps reduce muscle pain and stiffness.

Every night I put it on my left knee and left wrist (injured in my fall last year), and it really seems to help. I like the fact that it is a natural pain reliever from the Arnica montana plant.

Spiced Dark Chocolate Cherry Saltine Toffee

Transform a basic cracker into a classic holiday treat

  • 1 sleeve saltine crackers (about 40)
  • 1 cup plus 1 Tablespoon unsalted butter ((2 sticks))
  • 1 cup light brown sugar, or to taste
  • 1/2 tsp. cayenne pepper, or to taste
  • 12 oz. finely chopped 70% dark chocolate or dark chocolate chips
  • 1/4 tsp freshly ground black pepper
  • 1/2 cup chopped pecans
  • 1/2 cup dried cherries
  • 1/2 tsp flaky sea salt, such as Maldon
  1. Preheat oven to 400 degrees F. Line a rimmed 13-by-9-inch baking pan with nonstick foil or spray with cooking spray. Arrange the saltines, salt side down, in a single layer in the pan. Set aside.

  2. Melt 1 cup butter in a large heavy-duty saucepan over medium. Add the brown sugar and cayenne pepper and raise temperature to high to bring to a boil. Cook for 3 minutes. Immediately pour toffee mixture over the saltines and bake for 6 minutes.

  3. Remove from oven and nudge the saltines back together if they're floating in the toffee.Set aside for 3 or 4 minutes.

  4. Melt the chocolate over medium heat in the top of a double boiler set over a pan of simmering water. (Or place the chocolate in a microwavable container and melt on low power until smooth, about 3 minutes, stirring every 30 seconds.)

  5. Add the remaining tablespoon of butter and the black pepper to the melted chocolate. Pour over the toffee and spread in an even layer with an offset spatula. Top with pecans and dried cherries. Let stand to cool slightly, then sprinkle with sea salt. Transfer to the refrigerator to harden completely, about 1 hour.

  6. Pop loose from the pan, break into pieces, and store in an airtight container separated with sheets of waxed paper or parchment paper.

Happy New Year 2024

Here we go, another new year! Do you change your behavior or make resolutions? Does the month of January mean a new start? After an indulgent Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year, this month is a time for me to reset. I am ready to eat a cleaner diet and get back into a healthier routine. There is something to be said for having structure in one’s every day life. Happy New Year to you and yours!

The Concept of Time

I clearly remember how time, especially during grade school, felt like it dragged on forever. Why does time go so slow when we are younger, and speed up when we are older? Perhaps the older I get, the more I value time and want to live more intentionally.

Some people pick a word or theme for the year. Last year my theme was financial austerity~trying to get a better understanding of where money goes and spending wisely. Not sure I completely accomplished that but I feel like I have a better handle on that responsibility. But this year, I am going back to basics.

I prefer to be organized and focused on accomplishing things so I am back to using a daily planner. Not just for work but also for pleasure. Holiday Projects in January

One of the goals this year is to put our holiday decorations away in an organized manner. Not everyone organizes the same way and it can be challenging if two people, with totally different organizational systems, store the holiday stuff.

For years, I would put all the holidays items away and knew exactly where everything was. But now that my husband is helping, he has his own system~which looks very different from mine. The hope is that we can find common ground and create an organizational system that will work for both of us.

Another project is updating the holiday card address list. This is one task that I must do right after the holidays or I’m scrambling next November. Each card’s address will be cross checked with what I have on file for next year’s mailing list. Cards are not inexpensive and I certainly do not like getting one back with an undeliverable stamp due to an outdated or bad address.

Since we use Minted for our holiday card production, they have an online address assistant where we input our mailing addresses. It is so easy to update and any changes to this list are made electronically.

Annual Projects~both Big and Small

For those of you who own an older or historic home, you realize the house projects are never quite done. This week I am creating 2 project lists for the year~one for bigger projects (those that will take several days) to small projects (those that can be accomplished in a few hours).

My goal is to complete one big project per month and at least one, hopefully 2+ smaller projects per week.

A Focus on Health

Fortunately, I am blessed with good health. In the past my only trips to a doctor would include an annual (or every 3 years) physical. Anything in between would fall under an urgent or emergency visit (like my shattered big toe). However, since my unexpected kidney stone in October, the last two months are filled with follow-up medical visits, even though I feel perfectly fine.

2024 Goal is Good Health

Each visit, quite frankly, has been awful. Long delays, unnecessary tests, rude employees and the answer to my many questions is “well, you are getting older.” My health goals in 2024 are to be so healthy that I never need to see a doctor, strengthen my immune system so I do not get sick even when around others who are, and continue exercising and eating well.

Scheduling some Creative Time

On my new 2024 planner, I am marking out time on Fridays for painting. I love to paint but haven’t really done anything since 2022. The only painting I did in 2023 is a watercolor Valentine’s dinner invitation and a watercolor class with my friend, Tevia.

My art room is a bit of a mess which will take some organizing, but the goal is to paint 4 days a month and challenge myself to both bigger and smaller canvases too. Here is the only large canvas I have painted to date (in 2022).

Saturday Meanderings

For the last Saturday Meanderings of 2023, I am including two weeks of good things to chat about. With every intention to post last Saturday, well, you know how life goes the week before and after Christmas. Happily with a house full of family and guests, I never finished my post and here it is, a week later and there is more to add. So grab a cup of coffee or tea, and let’s chat about all good things over the last two weeks.

Before Christmas

What a week! On Saturday, December 16th we made the 6 hour drive to Newport Beach, California where we celebrated my husband’s birthday.

With the average house price in Newport Beach being nearly $4mm, it is obviously a place we cannot buy, but we certainly love to visit. We always stay at Marriott Newport Coast Villas, which overlooks the Pacific Ocean and is situation right on the Pacific Coast Highway. This location is just perfect for our family and after coming here every summer when the children were younger, it feels a bit like a home away from home.

Four days of chock-a-block activities with the whole family (and significant others), from Disneyland to our favorite beach, the time is filled with lots of laughter and new memories. This Marriott property is so well maintained with beautiful landscaping too.

One of the highlights of blogging is meeting some truly wonderful people. During my September trip to Newport Beach, I learn that Wendy, from WM Design House lives in the area. So on this trip, we schedule time to meet for lunch and immediately, we become fast friends.

I love scheduling 4 to 5 days before Christmas to do something extra special with our family. Not only do we focus on my husband’s birthday (which can get lost in the holiday crunch), but hotel prices are still reasonable and accommodations available. Plus it’s a nice break from the holiday frenzy.

The Loofa (or luffa) is Ready!

This loofa plant has been the highlight of the garden this year. The vine is slowly dying off and I am picking dried loofa from the vine. If you recall, here is how it looks over the summer. At this point, this vegetable is very edible. Surprisingly, it did very well in our exceptionally hot summer.

As it matures, the fruit lightens in color and loses water weight. The shell hardens and starts to separate from interior fibers. Here is what the loofa looks like now.

The dried skin easily peels off and the seeds shake out from the inside. I find this plant so interesting! If you would like to grow this in your garden, here is a link to luffa seeds. I haven’t used it yet as a body scrubber but will keep you posted!

Annual Holiday Competition

My son, Benjamin has long-time friends (Emily, Max and Jeffrey) who gather each Christmas and compete in a food/drink cookoff. To date, the competition has included BLTs, stuffing, and hamburgers. This year they decide to do a cocktail one with categories of stirred, blended, shaken and shooters.

With a cleared kitchen island, each friend has a prep station. Official descriptions and judging sheets are provided to us and our friends, Rick and Janie. Not only are the drinks innovative and delicious, but it is so joyful to see the camaraderie between these incredible friends. Judging scores includes presentation, taste and innovation.

From tropical pinã coladas to snowball Negronis, this group did not disappoint. Operating as skilled mixologist, each and every drink is delicious.

Cocktails are rated with a numbering system and judged with a blind tasting. It’s always hard to pick one winner because such effort and attention is done by all three participants.

Christmas Day and After

Christmas morning is a very casual and relaxing affair here at Bella Terra. After the traditional breakfast of Eggs a la Goldenrod (see the recipe here), smoked salmon (made by my husband), bagels, and fresh squeezed orange juice for mimosas, we open our presents in the living room. It is possible there are more dog than people presents!

A late afternoon dinner is served in the dining room. What is fun about this year’s meal is that it was thrown together without a lot of forethought. The menu includes a smoked pork loin, a salad made from fresh garden greens and sweet potatoes, prepared in the most delicious way (recipe to come soon), cornbread muffins and a previously homemade (and frozen) pumpkin pie.

The table centerpiece is simply created with bottlebrush trees gathered from other parts of the house. Though our dining room is small and can only accommodate 10 people, it is very conducive to lively conversation and ambiance.

Celebrating the 12 Days of Christmas

I know many people are already dismantling their Christmas decorations, but not here at Bella Terra. This year, I decide to truly celebrate the 12 Days of Christmas (from Christmas Day to January 6, the Epiphany). My mother kept all decorations up until January 6th, a tradition we continue here.

What I love about this time between those two dates is the unique period of tranquility. I can fully enjoy the quiet beauty of the winter wonderland of our home without the stresses of the holiday bustle. In this sense of peace and stillness, I will slowly read and enjoy all the Christmas cards and letters we’ve received. Daily, I am watching a Christmas movie.

Even though Valentine’s Day merchandise is in the stores, I plan to be present and enjoy the peace and quiet of these 12 days. I invite you to join me in using this time for quiet reflection, to connect with nature’s stillness, spend quality time with loved ones, embrace deliberately slowing down, and savor your traditions and rituals.

Onward to 2022!

Do you treat the new year as a time to start fresh? Are new resolutions made? For me, I like to think of it as a time of assessment and evaluation. Looking back on the previous year, I note the highlights and the low points~what went well, and what things I’d like to change. And then create a plan. So let’s go onward to 2022!

My Word for 2022: Deliberate

With so many uncontrollable outside sources impacting our lives, I find it a bit challenging to stay focused, grounded, intentional and deliberate. According to Merriam-Webster dictionary’s definition of the verb deliberate, means “slow, unhurried, and steady as though allowing time for decision on each individual action involved”.

We all experience being pulled in many directions that acting with purpose is sometimes not possible. My hope for 2022 is to concentrate and be deliberate in four areas of focus: 1) Home; 2)Personal Growth/Productivity; 3) Health; 4) Aging/Future.

Our home

Does anyone else dream of a home where every closet, drawer, cabinet, room is organized, clean, with finished decor? Is this even possible? If someone has achieved this, please tell me how! Living in a historic home on a large property does have its maintenance challenges but it’s more than just that.

As we enter into an empty nesting life stage, there is much decluttering to do. Donating all the items we don’t use anymore, touch-up paint, re-upholstering or purchasing new furniture….you know, having the place looking like it’s ready for a realtor open house. Don’t get me wrong, many rooms I love, but I just need to tidy up a bit in some and alot in others.

The plan is to tackle two rooms (or more) and an outoor space a month. In January, the room goal is the master bedroom/closet, master bath and upstairs office. Starting is the biggest challenge and I plan to share the progress with you…please make me accountable!

Personal Growth/Productivity

I love to learn new things and having this blog is certainly a way to step out of my comfort zone. Meeting new friends and establishing relationships with others around the country is a wonderful benefit. And I am always learning through others who are far more talented than me.

In addition, I want to be more efficient with my time that I spend on the blog, and social media. Since I’m not a fan of being on the computer or phone for long hours, having a good schedule with focused assignments should make me more productive.

In 2021 I let my love of painting slide. Quite honestly, it has been months since I have picked up a paintbrush. For some reason, I am failing to make time in my life for this. So my hope and goal for 2022 is to set aside Fridays to paint. Do you know that my last post on painting was March 2020? You can see it here, but how did I let so much time slip by without doing something I love? Again, I need to prioritize.

One of the many downsides to this pandemic, is I feel I have lost my wanderlust and desire to explore. Though we traveled quite a bit last year, there is now a sense of foreboding that didn’t exist before. Perhaps the way to resolve that is more day trips and explorations closer to home. Arizona is such a beautiful state and it’s about time I learned more about the resource right in my back yard.

The month of December was riddled with injuries for me. As I was recovering from a shoulder injury early in the month, I had a bit of a snorkeling accident in St. Thomas, resulting in some rib cage damage. Of course, I thought I could “stretch it” out when I returned home to Phoenix, by gingerly attending a Pilates class. With limited range of motion, I inadvertently tweaked my psoas muscle. Arggg.

Just before Christmas I was limping and guarding my ribs, when I tripped backwards over a planter in the yard during a rain storm….twisting my left knee. Sigh. There are days when I feel like I should just wrap myself in bubble plastic and ice. Since the ribs will take about 6 weeks to heal, it hurts to engage my abdominal muscles. As a result, my lower back aches. I sound like a character in a Laurel and Hardy movie!

However, what I am learning is patience in healing. And I admit I am not very with tolerant with the setback of these injuries. Exercise is greatly limited to walking and breathing. BUT, I am committed to healing and making 2022 a very healthy year.

At the end of the day, our health is really up to us. I saw this post on Instagram by Dr. Raymond Nichols and agree with its rather blunt message. Here are the two deliberate actions I am taking in 2022:

  • Moving every day (except Sunday)~whether it is walking, Pilates, biking, going to the gym for an hour
  • Drinking half my body weight in ounces of water (so if you weigh 120 lbs, that’s 60 oz. of water daily)

Hopefully, this will lead to strengthening and losing some of the fruitcake pounds I put on over the holidays.

Aging/Future

Well, none of us are getting younger. My husband and I are starting to talk about the “next chapter”. We are both in good health, but we are aging and we want to start thinking about what we want to do when we grow up.

This past year we did investigate other parts of the country as living options~Charleston, Hilton Head, Palmetto Bluff, Edisto and Seabrook Islands on the east coast. Our recent visit to St. Thomas stimulated good conversation about living on the water vs. the mountains or desert.

Currently we feel blessed to live here and have a vacation home in the mountains. And maybe my love of the water will be satisfied with a lengthy Air BnB rental somewhere on a coast. But, none the less, it is fun to explore all options and who knows what the future holds.

Lastly, after the rather challenging management of my Aunt’s affairs last year, we really need to get our paperwork in order. That is a very necessary and important goal. I certainly do not want to leave the burden of managing our estate undefined and cumbersome to anyone. So I will be expanding on my Household and Family Binder (see that post here) and setting up a separate one for our deaths and estate planning.
