Saturday Meanderings

It’s hard to believe that this is the last Saturday Meanderings in February. Next week is March where, hopefully, Spring is just around the corner. Happy Saturday and thanks for joining me today! I love writing this post as it is a time where we can catch up on all good things this week.

Guest Cottage Update

The exterior of the guest cottage is painted. Even though the painters failed to use the correct color paint on the antique shutters, I think it is a happy mistake. Originally the shutters were painted a very dark blackish green, but this time, the shutters are painted the same color as the body of the cottage. I actually like it so, like I said, a happy mistake!

Painting the raised dots over the door

The painters did not want to paint the details around the front door, so I took care of that this week.

Attending an Art Class

If you live in this area, you know what a gem The Hermosa Inn is to our community. Not only is it a lovely place to stay or dine, but they hold fun classes on the weekends. Last Saturday, thanks to my husband for buying tickets, my friend, Tevia and I attend an acrylic class called Mimosas and Monet.

Carrie Curran’s painting and inspiration

The class is taught by artist Carrie Curran out on the patio of the beautiful inn. For 3 hours, we sipped on mimosas and had step-by-step artistic instruction. The above painting is the inspiration for the class. Aprons, canvases, paints, brushes and easels are provided.

Painting fun!

Certainly a fun way to spend a Saturday morning with a dear friend!

Cleaning an Oven

The double ovens in my kitchen have a self-cleaning option, which is really a gift. Unfortunately, the gas stove in the guest cottage does not have that, and I can honestly say it has been a LONG time since I’ve cleaned an oven.

dirty oven

The inside of this oven is so gross. It took me two days, two cans of Easy-off oven cleaner, but it now looks brand new. This picture doesn’t do it justice~grease caked on the sides, bottom and top of the oven, oven racks thick with icky cooked on food remnants.

Clean oven!!

Not the best picture, but trust me, this oven is 1000% cleaner! Oh happy days!

Making Candied Orange Peels

Candied Orange Peels

With March just around the corner, I am trying a few new Irish recipes. One of the recipes I’ve never heard of before (and will write a post about it soon) called for candied orange peels. Since we are in the height of citrus season here, all it takes is a quick trip to the orchard with fresh oranges in hand.

Perhaps the most challenging part is trying to get long strips of orange peel off the orange. Cook in sugar water and simmer. Dry the orange peels on a rack and then toss them in sugar. Relatively easy and they do add a bit of sunshine to the recipe. Here’s the link to the recipe.

Love this Litter!

When our sweet girls found 2 kittens in our yard, the agreement was that I would never clean the litter box. Personally, I cannot stand the smell and it was supposed to be a good lesson in animal care responsibility. Fast forward to now and the children gone, and now guess who cleans the litter box?

Pretty Litter

My friend, Christine, recommends this product called Pretty Litter. I cannot tell you how much I love this litter as it creates NO ODOR. It’s more expensive than typical cat litter, but my goodness, I am such a fan. Not only does it trap odor, but it monitors your cat’s urine health (color indicator for pH and blood).

Here is the direct link to their website.

Cooking Class this Week

A dear friend of ours is such an advocate for eating a plant-based diet. She hosted a cooking class this week at her home. It was informative as we watched the chef and nutritionist explain that plant-based eating is not only healthy but can be tasty too.

Lots of veggies

The nutritionist recommends eating 35 different vegetables (and fruits, I think) per week. Do you eat a lot of vegetables? In my stir-fry above, I have red bell pepper, snap peas, cauliflower, mushrooms, onion, and garlic contributing 6 veggies toward my 35. And yes, there is chicken in this dish.

Also, I find that if I pre-slice mushrooms and cut up the veggies before hand, freeze them in ziplock bags, then it is easier to throw all of this together for a quick and healthy meal.

Eat your fruits and veggies, folks!

What I was doing a Year ago?

Fresh roses in silica gel packets

In scanning through last year’s pictures, I realized I did a post on drying roses. Quite honestly, I forgot about these roses and now you can see what they look like after 1 year of drying. See the blog post here.

Dried roses, one year later

What project can I make with these? Maybe something for Easter? It would have been nice to remember them for Valentine’s Day but that obviously didn’t happen. Would love your thoughts and suggestions.

From Around the Internet

My spice cabinet is one hot mess. Looking for a particular spice is so very frustrating. It’s on my list of many things to do when I finally get to the kitchen (I am working my way from one corner of the house to the other).

Michele from Vintage Home Designs does a spice cabinet refresh. The spice jars she uses are cute and different. Check it out here.

French Country Cottage

When I was growing up, I loved rearranging my bedroom. Courtney, from the French Country Cottage shares her living room with 5 different configurations. So if you are thinking about a Spring refresh, you may get some ideas from Courtney’s post. If nothing else, you will love her pictures.

I want to try this….a 3 ingredient dish that takes 20 minutes? Has anyone tasted Trader Joe’s cauliflower gnocchi? This entrée from Kitchn sounds delicious and healthy too. Looks like I need a trip to Trader Joe’s this week.

Well, happy weekend, friends! We have house guests and our daughter is visiting for the weekend. It’s supposed to get really chilly again on Sunday and Monday. I am ready to plant our Spring garden but we are not out of the frost danger yet.

Saturday Meanderings

I am so sorry I missed posting Saturday Meanderings last week. In addition to having house guests, planning, cooking and organizing our Valentine Dinner party (if you missed it see it here), our sweet dog Sox had an episode where we thought it was over for him. Thankfully, he came around but it was a heart wrenching moment. But onward and upward and here we are on Saturday for another Saturday Meanderings where we chat about all good things!

Getting Paint out of Carpet

In selecting colors for repainting the guest cottage, I brought a few gallons home from Sherwin Williams. Unfortunately, there was a small amount of paint under the lid and when I turned the corner, the can rolled over in the back of the car. Dark green paint spilled out onto my car’s trunk carpet, which is tan.

I didn’t realize this had happened as I have large pieces of foam covering the carpet. My car is 17 years old, but the interior carpet looks brand new under the foam. Two days later, I discover the paint stain, which is hard and dried. Sigh.

Not really knowing how to tackle this, I get my trusty bottle of Krud Kutter and spray the spot and let it sit. This cleaner/degreaser softens the hardened paint. Blotting up as much of the paint as I can, I continue to spray and rub until all the of the paint is gone!

Green paint spot gone!

This is a miracle cleaner and I cannot recommend it enough!

By the way, having foam covering the trunk floor is really great for protecting the rug, but also helps to prevent things from rolling around (except paint cans!).

Do You and Your Spouse Have Different Decorating Styles

Shutterstock image

My friend, Andrea asks her husband to describe his ideal house and is surprised by his answer. I ask my husband the same question and discover some enlightening details.

But what do you do if your tastes are vastly different. For example, my husband owns very contemporary art, while I love old oil paintings in substantial gold frames.

An early oil painting of mine

If you find your spouse or significant other has different design tastes than you, Andrea has a great post and several tips on what you can do to negotiate and mix your styles. See it here.

Before and After Sofa

The very old, yet well made sofa is back from the upholsterer and I am so delighted. I can’t stress enough that reupholstering a sofa with a hardwood frame is well worth it vs. buying something new made out of particle board.

In order to give the old gal a more contemporary look, the upholsterer made two seat and back cushions where here was three.

Here is the before. See how lumpy (and dirty) the cushions are?

Viola! Here is the new sofa in white. It looks like a completely different piece of furniture. I am so happy with it…now it will need some Scotchguard.

Newly reupholstered sofa

My Geraniums

Lush pink geraniums

For the last few years, my geraniums have suffered from worms/catepillars that eat holes in the small blooms, preventing beautiful flower growth. Trying different sprays and treatments, nothing seem to work. For hours I would hand pick those little buggers off but each season they would return.

See the holes in the buds?

My husband bought a bag of First Saturday Lime which I spread on top of the soil in each pot. First Saturday Lime is an environmentally-friendly alternative to pesticides that is safe for children and pets. This product creates an inhospitable environment for insects to reproduce. Apply it monthly for best results.

Valentine front porch

To date, my geraniums look fabulous and there is NO sign of those creepy crawlies. What an impact the pink geraniums make on my Valentine front porch. Every single geranium pot is filled with large, gorgeous blooms, thanks to this product.

Loving Jicama

Lately, we are snacking (all the time) on fresh jicama. Jicama is a root vegetable with thick, brown skin. It’s white inside and tastes like an apple but not as sweet. It’s a bit like a potato but with a lot fewer carbs.

Jicama cut into heart shapes

It’s a fiber-packed snack that prevents constipation, lowers cholesterol, and lowers your chances of getting colon cancer and heart disease. Loaded with Vitamin C, it gives a big boost to the immune system. It’s also good for your eyes and skin.

Shutterstock Image of Jicama

Jicama has Vitamin B-6, which supports your brain and nerves, forms red blood cells, and turns protein into energy. If you’re watching your blood sugar and insulin, jicama is a safe snack. It has carbs, but they have a low glycemic load.

Plus it is easy to cut them into fun shapes using a cookie cutter! And they do not brown like cut apples.

Such a Sweet Story

I read this on Nextdoor and this really restores my faith in the kindness of others. It’s a bit long, but trust me, you will be glad you did (and you may need tissue). It’s a great way to end this post.

Our sweet Cooper and Sox

*******************************************************************************************************************

Our 14-year-old dog Abbey died last month. The day after she passed away my 4-year-old daughter Meredith was crying and talking about how much she missed Abbey. She asked if we could write a letter to God so that when Abbey got to heaven, God would recognize her. I told her that I thought that we could, so she dictated these words:

Dear God, Will you please take care of my dog? Abbey died yesterday and is with you in heaven. I miss her very much. I ‘m happy that you let me have her as my dog even though she got sick. I hope you will play with her. She likes to swim and play with balls. I am sending a picture of her so when you see her you will know that she is my dog. I really miss her. Love, Meredith

We put the letter in an envelope with a picture of Abbey & Meredith, addressed it to God/Heaven. We put our return address on it. Meredith pasted several stamps on the front of the envelope because she said it would take lots of stamps to get the letter all the way to heaven. That afternoon she dropped it into the letter box at the post office. A few days later, she asked if God had gotten the letter yet. I told her that I thought He had.

Yesterday, there was a package wrapped in gold paper on our front porch addressed, ‘To Meredith’ in an unfamiliar hand. Meredith opened it. Inside was a book by Mr. Rogers called, ‘When a Pet Dies.’ Taped to the inside front cover was the letter we had written to God in its opened envelope. On the opposite page was the picture of Abbey & Meredith and this note:

Dear Meredith, Abbey arrived safely in heaven. Having the picture was a big help and I recognized her right away. Abbey isn’t sick anymore.

Her spirit is here with me just like it stays in your heart. Abbey loved being your dog. Since we don’t need our bodies in heaven, I don’t have any pockets to keep your picture in so I’m sending it back to you in this little book for you to keep and have something to remember Abbey by. Thank you for the beautiful letter and thank your mother for helping you write it and sending it to me. What a wonderful mother you have. I picked her especially for you. I send my blessings every day and remember that I love you very much. By the way, I’m easy to find. I am wherever there is love.

Love, God

Well, that’s a wrap! Thank you so much for joining me today. Have a wonderful weekend. Today I am attending a watercolor class with a dear friend, which is a big treat for me.

Saturday Meanderings

Happy Weekend and I am so glad you are here today for another Saturday Meanderings. What an interesting week~ranging from chores, bill paying, meetings, hearings and a wonderful tour of a transitional living facility. Let’s get started chatting about all good things this week.

A Snowy Mountain Getaway

We took a quick overnight trip up to our cabin as we had not been there since Thanksgiving. What a winter wonderland! There was a good dumping of snow over a week ago, enough where we could not get into our unplowed driveway.

Frozen rain chain

However, it is far from a relaxing getaway as we finally got to see the results of a leaky new roof after the first snowfall. Last summer, we had the entire roof replaced. Our front entry is just a mess with ceiling, walls and some floor damage.

Roof leak results

Hopefully, this will all be repaired soon. Sigh. It’s always something.

Guest Cottage Update

The preparation for painting the guest cottage is being done and painting will commence this weekend.

All the furniture is now in the driveway while the carpets are being cleaned. We have used Zerorez before and they do not disappoint. They are professional, affordable and do a very good job.

I removed all the draperies from the guest cottage. Unless you are a professional, who can understand all the fabric care symbols?

The drapery panels are linen with a blackout lining from Pottery Barn. Dry clean only and no ironing. When I stopped by the dry cleaner, I am surprised (actually shocked) that each panel would cost $100 to dry clean. What? Instead I decide to wash them myself on cold and line dry.

And guess what? They look beautiful. No shrinking, no wrinkles and clean as a whistle. Don’t you love saving money?!? Especially when washing them at home works.

Chickens Not Laying

We have had chickens for nearly 20 years. During that time, the hens tend to lay less in the winter, but we always get fresh eggs every day. Until about 3-4 weeks ago. The gals have completely stopped laying. I know there is a national debate about this as this seems to be more the norm than not.

Fermenting Chicken feed

My neighbor and friend, Kelly from Simple & Clean Living, had the same problem until she changed up their food~by fermenting the chicken feed. We are in day 6 of feeding the chicken fermented food, plus supplementing it with pumpkin seeds, dried peas, flax seed and Grubblies. No eggs yet, except an occasional fairy egg….which are tiny eggs without yolks.

Normal size egg vs. fairy egg

Keeping my fingers crossed that the girls will start producing soon. I miss our delicious fresh eggs and not fond of spending the ridiculous price in the grocery store!

Signs of Spring

Even though our temperatures have been near freezing in the mornings, the first sign that Spring is coming is the blooming of the peach tree. These delicate pink blossoms are such a welcomed sight.

Robins, of all sizes are clustering in large flocks in the trees by the front fountain. I could spend hours just watching them fly in and out, sipping the water and staying hydrated. If you are on Instagram, I posted a reel yesterday of them enjoying the free water @lifeatbellaterra.

A New Recipe this Week

Half Baked Harvest is one of my favorite resources for recipes. In this chilly weather, I love making soups that satisfy. Here is a healthy version of Wonton Soup which you can whip up in 25 minutes. Since I did not have all the ingredients, I took the liberty of altering the recipe a bit.

For example, instead of shiitake mushrooms, I only had baby Bella (brown) mushrooms. This big bag of organic potstickers from Costco is used instead of wontons and Swiss chard is a substitute for bok choy. I did not make the sesame chili oil as I’m not a fan of hot toppings. It is delicious and you can find the recipe here.

Thanks to my neighbor, Steve, I have a huge bag of Meyer lemons. I can honestly say that this Meyer Lemon Marmalade recipe is truly one of my favorites. Doubling the recipe still doesn’t give me enough to give as gifts and enjoy. You can see the recipe here. Lemon curd to follow this weekend!

Problems Sleeping?

I am a night time processor. Falling asleep is not a problem, but if I hear or see something disturbing during the day, then a restless night follows. That why I stopped watching the news. I am very excited to share this delicious bedtime drink with you. It tastes like a coffee shop latte but with ingredients to help with energy, stress and mood.

By Clevr, the Sleeptime SuperLatte seems to be working….and it is delicious. Made with chicory, carob, vanilla bean, oat and coconut milk, valerian, passionflower, hops, ashwagandha and reishi, this soothing nightcap helps you de-stress and rest. Just add hot water~super simple!

I mix mine with an Ozeri milk frother, but here is a more affordable alternative. If you order Clevr’s sample set, I believe they include a milk frother.

If you want to try it, please order through this link and I will get $20 off my next order. I’ve actually already placed another order for some of their other products, which I will review once I receive them!

Valentine Tea Bags

Heart Shaped tea bags DIY

How cute are these homemade heart shaped tea bags? Norma from Paint Me Pink has a beautiful detailed tutorial on how to make these with coffee filters. Even though I do not know Norma, I love her photos and her ideas! I hope to try this DIY before Valentine’s Day. You can see it here.

I always love to share things of beauty with you, but occasionally, life isn’t that way. However, I admire the tenacity of Tina from The Enchanted Home. Tina saw this video of an injustice to a young girl with spina bifida by her teacher. Once you watch the video you will know what I mean. Please read Tina’s post here as she provides an update on the situation and a way you can voice your concern. Sometimes it takes the compassion of many to change the behavior of a few.

Orvis Videos

Orvis is one of those companies I admire. They have been in business since 1856, privately owned by the same family. Every now and again, I get an email with a link to one of their amazing video stories. The videos are not about selling product but the topics ranges from tranquility to inspiration.

Here is a video about the president of Orvis’s dog, Copa. It’s about 6 1/2 minutes long but explains the importance of dogs in our lives. Copa is a mature dog, like my sweet beagle, Sox. You may shed a few tears.

Well, that’s a wrap! What are your plans for the weekend? I hope to do some painting (art not rooms) and more cooking. Have a lovely one and stay safe out there!

Saturday Meanderings

Happy Saturday friends! As slow as last week went for me, this week is just the opposite. The antithesis of my hope for a new year, but it is unavoidable when many things unexpectedly collide at once. But it is now the weekend, and time to take a breath. Welcome to another Saturday Meanderings where we chat about all good things this week.

Painting the Guest Cottage

Due to the heavy rains this week, my painter will not be starting the guest house project until next week. I am debating about paint colors, but I am leaning toward keeping the colors very similar. The main cottage color is Basil by Sherwin Williams and the trim and shutter colors are similar to the main house. Looking forward to fresh paint!

Guest House Repairs

The sofa in the guest cottage is an original one from Ethan Allen purchased decades ago. It has been reupholstered but it is time for another update. I do hate to get rid of an old sofa because they have North American hardwood frames, vs. the manufactured wood used today on new ones.

The cushions need a complete overhaul so in order to have a more contemporary look, I will go to two bottom and two back cushions. This is a sofa bed too, but the mattress is relatively new and hardly used. So it’s off to the upholsterer next week. Possibly, I’m leaning toward a white denim (?) that I can Scotchguard.

Antique bed frame

Currently the bed has a full mattress, but it may make sense to upgrade to a queen. I am hoping I can just add a queen bed frame to the antique head and foot boards. It is a small bedroom so I will need to measure to see if it can take on the additional length and width.

Like the pool house remodel, I hope to replace all the can lights with LED ones. The kitchen may need a fresh coat of paint too. It is fun to reimagine this space!

Finally hanging my large painting

Last year, I shared my largest painting ever with you. It is inspired by artist Ericka Carter and something similar is featured in the Sundance Catalog (for $16,800). Due to its size, my husband reinforced the canvas with a stronger wood frame.

However, when hung, you see the wood from the sides. I finally got around to painting the wood in Naples Yellow to match the canvas. Now it is officially in the pool house, adding a bit of color to a white wall. Love checking those small projects off the list!

A Delicious Breakfast for Guests

This week, my cousin Charleen and her/our friend Carla visited from California and stayed a few days. For breakfast, I tried this new recipe from my blogging friend, Rachel at The Ponds Farmhouse. Unfortunately, I was unable to taste it due to my January reset eating plan, but they said it was delicious!

Blueberry bread pudding before going in the oven

I love recipes that you can make ahead of time. This one sits overnight in the refrigerator and just goes into the oven for 30 to 40 minutes. The recipe has so many yummy ingredients~from fresh blueberries to pancakes. I didn’t know you could buy frozen pancakes (I did know about frozen waffles), which makes assembly very easy.

Serve it warm with maple syrup! Here is the link to Rachel’s delicious breakfast Blueberry Bread Pudding.

Another Major Unexpected Project

When we restored this property 22 years ago, my husband put in the state of the art home security/technology system. Fast forward to today and all the technology is outdated. As the system begins to fail, we are unable to repair them as parts are no longer being manufactured. Plus the world has gone from analog to digital; wired to wireless.

Old equipment

After receiving several bids to update the system that would literally break the bank, my daughter’s boyfriend (who has an IT degree), offered to tackle this project. We are about 2 weeks into it, and it is such a major undertaking for him. Nonetheless, he is determined to bring us into current technology with the ability to upgrade in the future.

We’re thinking of adopting this smart young man who is kind enough to help us who are technically challenged. However, many rooms are a mess until all the wiring is removed and new “smart” equipment is installed. Times like this I sort of miss the on/off dial on a television.

Garden Update

We have frost warnings here until next Tuesday. My garden is confused as we have remnants of autumn and new growth for spring.

Last of the autumn leaves on the grapevine
Hollyhocks growing rapidly
Covering up for frost warnings

Generally the frost warnings are over by the end of February. Then I can really start planting the Spring garden.

Cleaning and Coating the Concrete Terrace

Behind our pool house is a small covered outdoor terrace. It is a pleasant place to sit and view the hen house and garden. A few years ago, we tried this concrete cleaning and coating treatment on our main home’s back terrace and loved the results. You can see it here.

My husband took on this project this week and the results are very satisfying. Nice and clean.

Week 3 of January Reset Eating Plan

We are in the third week of The Fast Metabolism Diet and trying new many new recipes. If you order this book, I strongly suggest getting the hard copy because I use mine all the time while cooking.

Hearty Turkey Stew

Why do men lose weight faster than women? We are eating what feels like a substantial amount of food (mostly vegetables, protein, some grain/fat), and my husband has dropped quite a few lbs. Not many complaints on this reset but I do miss a few things like my morning coffee and late afternoon cocktail. Only a week and a few days left so I’ll report in on our progress.

Indoor Plant Care

As much as I love to garden and feel relatively successful at it, I am not great at keeping indoor plants alive. Actually, I’m quite bad at it. My friend, Stacy from Bricks ‘n Blooms provides so much information about indoor plants on her website. She recently posted The Secret to Watering Plants Indoors and you can see it here.

Stacy Ling at Bricks n Blooms

Favorite Product of the Week

I cannot tell you how much I LOVE this rose water spray. Not only does it smell heavenly, but it hydrates your face. I’m hoping it’s not a limited edition, as Trader Joe’s can often do. Grab it while you can. Either at a Trader Joe’s store or online here.

Well, that’s a wrap for Saturday Meanderings today. I hope you were able to see the transformation of the French bistro table and chairs this week. Next week, I hope to share some Valentine ideas as I just gave the front porch a bit of love for February.

Front porch love

Have a warm and cozy weekend. Stay safe out there!

Reviving a Bistro Table and Chair Set

Several years ago I picked up this French marble top bistro table and 2 metal chairs at a yard sale. The romantic in me envisioned sitting there with a cup of tea or a good glass of wine, just relaxing. However, this set has been on the back porch of our pool house for several years, unused. With my daughter moving into a new apartment, there is a need for a small table and chairs so instead of buying something new, I decide to revive this one.

Current Condition

Even though I would love every area and item in my house to be in tip-top shape, the reality is, that many things are not. I do find it a bit embarrassing to show you the “before” pictures, but heck, that’s part of the process. Though the outdoor space is covered, the weather elements (dust, dirt, bird droppings) has taken its toll.

I love that the curved back chairs swivel, but the solid seat is made of a plywood circle which I covered in oil cloth so no one’s behind would get a splinter. The solid seat is not affixed, but fits well enough and stays in place under the cushion. Surprisingly, the cushions are dusty and dirty, but the fabric and filler is still in relatively good condition.

Green paint on the chairs is chipped in many places and the black paint on the table base is faded. Mechanically, everything else is sound.

When I lift the wooden seat base, I am find many black widow egg sacks and a few large spiders. Ewww.

If you’ve never seen a black widow spider, here she is trying to hide from me. If you look closely, you can see a sliver of the red hourglass on her underbelly. She is very much alive. Again, ewww.

Removing dirt, dust and spider webs

Prepping for Paint

After removing the spiders, webs and egg sacks, I thoroughly wipe down the chairs and table. Here you can see the condition of the paint on the chairs. They definitely need fresh paint.

The marble table top has rust stains too. My husband uses a combination of Krud Kutter, a concentrated cleaner/degreaser/and stain remover (love this stuff!) and Granite Gold (a stone cleaner). Nearly all of the grime and discoloration disappears.

All ready for fresh paint

Since my daughter loves the color black (see post here about her black and white bedroom here), it makes sense to paint the chairs and table base in a high gloss black.

Prepping for paint really takes the most time. With the work surface of the chairs and table clean, I place the items on a drop cloth outside. In the meantime, I put the two cushions in the washing machine, hoping to get out the dirt and dust.

Painting the Items

Rust-oleum black gloss spray paint

To paint the table base and two chairs, it requires 2-3 cans of spray paint. My go-to paint for metal is from Rust-oleum, as it prevents rust. This particular one is both a paint and primer and is high gloss black. It appears the spray top is redesigned on some of the cans, which helps prevent trigger finger fatigue.

With so many open spaces on the chairs, it’s impossible not to waste paint, but one coat does seem to cover everything.

Recovering the Wood Seat

The oil cloth fabric is deteriorated, but still solid enough to prevent any splinters from emerging from the plywood seat. But it looks awful as is.

Heavy duty stapler

I find some leftover fabric that is black, soft and fleece-like and use it to cover both wooden seats. Using a Powershot heavy duty stapler I quickly affix the fabric to the wood. Easy peasy and the solid seat looks so much better.

What an improvement already!

What to Do with the Cushions

Since the cushions did launder well, the problem is the current color and fabric texture. I search the basement for black and white fabric and I find the old cushion covers from the chairs I reupholstered for the pool house (see that post here). They are perfect with the exception that they are too big. And to my delight, the covers have zippers too!

With some tailoring, I am able to recycle and retro-fit these seat covers for the newly cleaned cushions. In addition, I find some more of the same fabric, and decide to make small back cushions. These chairs are comfortable but the metal curved backs are a bit hard on the body.

Adding Small Back Cushions

Using some brown paper, I lay it inside the curve of the back of the chair. I trace the chair backing to get a sense for how large and what shape I want the back pillow.

This now becomes my pattern for the back cushions.

The Finished Product

Look how sweet this is! I am so happy with the results~especially since the cost of this project is minimal (3 cans of spray paint!).

The back cushions are secured with cloth tabs and velcro squares. They are lightly stuffed with fiber fill and provide just enough softness so you don’t feel the metal.

The white Carrera marble top did clean up nicely, using

Now all the chair frames and table leg are all the same color. It feels so fresh and clean, I almost don’t want to part with it. But it will be perfect in my daughter’s kitchen in her new apartment.

Well, I promised to only post when I had something fun to share, so I am hoping you enjoy this transformation of 3 neglected pieces of furniture. This project was a bit unexpected but I am happy to fill my daughter’s furniture void without buying something new.

Thanks for checking in with me today! Have a beautiful week.
